Salvatore Bellomo: Cluster no longer sufficient, mergers are necessary
Industrial districts were a basic factor for the development of the Italian economy, having helped SMEs grow and become more and more competitive.
The geographical concentration of companies operating in the same sector has forced companies of the district towards continuous improvement in order to excel on the other, offering better products and services, while the presence of companies downstream and upstream in the chain has permitted an easy knowledge transfer and a continuous technological progress.
It should not be forgotten the importance of local governments, which act as glue for this dynamic system and are the catalyst of development: let’s think for example about the activities of internationalization that small enterprises can not sustain without the help of local institutions such as chambers of commerce or industrial associations.
However, in this era of unprecedented crisis, in which firms face drop in turnover of several tens of percentage points, it is our opinion that the districts are no longer sufficient.
